Director Don Rase brings an experienced eye to his performance-driven work, that is both thoughtful and entertaining. With terrific comedic timing, an ear for relatable dialogue and a true appreciation for authentic performances, Don likes to find talented actors and together create interesting characters and memorable on screen moments.
His commercial artistry has been honed through years on set in many different roles. He came up through the ranks as a grip, props guy, production manager, assistant director and producer on commercials, TV shows and independent features. While reaching only marginal success in these areas, it became clear directing might be the only way to stay in the film business.
After starting his directing carrier at Backyard Productions in Los Angeles, he has now been directing freelance for over 10 years. Don continues to evolve and stay fresh by approaching each new project with an open mind and a very high level of passion for the work. Don has a true appreciation for the creative process and considers himself a dedicated collaborator. He is known for running a calm and drama free set, setting a tone where agency, actors, crew and clients all feel valued and welcome to share their ideas throughout the process. Rase says, “I have always been a 'best idea wins' kind of director, and am happy to take credit for any good idea no matter where it comes from.”
Seasoned, but never jaded, Don loves the process and gets truly excited by helping a project take shape with every meeting, scout or casting session.
His distinctive character driven style is on display in campaigns for McDonalds, Conoco, Jackson Life, Stihl chainsaws, Bud Lite, Smart Car, Ad council, LA Film festival and hundreds more national and regional television commercials.
Don lives in Denver Colorado with his creative director wife, while both of his kids attend college. When he’s not shooting, Don spends his time skiing, watching movies and shooting hoops.
